What Is SEO? A Plain English Guide for Small Businesses

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is everything you do so your business shows up when people search Google for what you sell. When someone types "bakery near me" or "hair salon in Birmingham" and your business appears at the top, that is SEO working. No jargon from here on, just what it is, how it works, and what you can do about it.
Why SEO matters for a small business
Most people look a business up online before they call, visit, or buy. If you are not on the first page of Google, or in the top three on Google Maps, most of those people never see you. They find a competitor instead.
Unlike ads, SEO does not stop working the day you stop paying. A page that ranks well can keep bringing in calls for years.
How Google decides who shows up first
Google wants to show the most useful, trustworthy answer for each search. It looks at hundreds of signals, but for a small business they come down to a few questions.
- Relevance. Does your website clearly say what you do and where you do it?
- Trust. Do other websites, directories, and reviews back you up?
- Experience. Does your site load fast, work well on a phone, and answer the question the person searched?
- Location. For local searches, how close are you to the person searching, and is your Google Business Profile complete?
The three types of SEO
| Type | What it covers | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| On page SEO | The words and structure of your website | Page titles, headings, service pages, answering common questions |
| Technical SEO | How well Google can read and load your site | Site speed, mobile design, sitemaps, fixing broken pages |
| Local SEO | Showing up in your area and on Google Maps | Google Business Profile, reviews, directory listings, local pages |
For most local businesses, local SEO is where the fastest wins are. The map results at the top of Google get a large share of the clicks for searches like "near me."
What you can do this week
- Claim and fill out your Google Business Profile completely: hours, services, photos, and a description that says what you do and the cities you serve.
- Ask happy customers for a Google review, and reply to every review you get.
- Make sure your business name, address, and phone number match everywhere they appear online.
- Give each main service its own page on your website, instead of listing everything on one page.
- Check your site on your phone. If it is slow or hard to use, fix that first.
How long does SEO take?
SEO is a slow build, not a switch. Fixes to your Google Business Profile and reviews can show up within weeks. Ranking a website for competitive searches usually takes several months of steady work. Anyone who guarantees a number one ranking is guessing.
Do it yourself or hire help?
You can absolutely start on your own with the list above. Where an agency helps is consistency: keeping your profile active, writing the pages and posts Google rewards, building listings, and tracking what is working month after month. If you would rather spend that time running your business, that is the part we take off your plate.
